Canadian hospitals crowdsource patients to improve hospital food

Crowdicity has been selected by the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto to support an innovative new project to crowdsource opinion on the standard of the food in its hospitals, with the aim of improving the quality of the 115 million meals they serve up each year.

Involving UHN staff, patients, visitors and the broader Ontario community, The Choices for Ontario Food project aims to uncover creative solutions that can increase the purchase of fresh and local food for hospital in-patients based in Ontario, Canada. The UHN, made up of the Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, has put forward three challenges aimed to get participants thinking and talking about local food:

  1. What are your soothing foods when sick or injured?
  2. How might we change the way staff think of food in patient care?
  3. How might we use local food to generate revenue?

Catering for up to 1,190 patients in three acute care hospitals and five rehabilitation centres, the UHN serve millions of meals every year. Using the Crowdicity platform, the UHN will be able to gather, develop and trial the best ideas from the local community. The aim of the project is to strengthen the Ontario economy through the purchase of locally grown food, save the hospitals money by cutting down and waste and also improve the standard of patient care by serving meals which are both tasty and comforting.

Adeline Cohen, Food Project Coordinator at UHN, said,“It’s very important to us to create and stimulate growth in our local province – securing the income of local farmers and fostering long-lasting relationships between consumers and providers. We believe that strengthening our understanding of the way food is produced and delivered is exceptionally important to the overall health and well-being of our local communities – and we are proud to be at the forefront of this cultural shift.”
