How Crowds Have Wisdom

Crowdicity clients, the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust give us their perspective on the power of crowdsourcing across the NHS.

The age of the internet has led to a lot of new words being placed in our dictionaries. So here’s the Merriam-Webster definition of ‘crowd-sourcing’:

“The practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community.”

The utility of this kind of approach for the perfection of innovative practice should be obvious: not only is crowdsourcing in and of itself innovative, which may before a conversation even begins allow for the emergence of new kinds of ideas; it also enables, quickly and easily, the widespread discussion and testing of fresh thinking. Crowdsourcing is, in short, a uniquely efficient means of gathering both ideas and feedback from a much wider range of perspectives than might ordinarily be achieved within the same timeframe. For both the initial testing of an idea, and for its later consistent adoption, crowdsourcing could prove a powerful tool across the NHS.

That’s why we’ve been particularly excited to work with Crowdicity over the last few months. Named by NESTA and the Guardian as one of the ‘Top 100 Open Innovation Companies in the World’, Crowdicity build digital platforms which enable crowdsourcing activity. Our own platform, christened We Think and devised as an online space where staff and partners from across HEFT’s varied research and innovation communities can come together instantly and collegiately, has just launched with a staged invitation process. We hope in future weeks and months to open the community out ever more widely: crowdsourcing, after all, is all about harnessing the dynamism of the crowd.
